INTRODUCTION

The Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi is the sole regulatory body of nursing and midwifery education, training, practice and professional conduct of nursing and midwifery personnel in the country. It was established in 1966 under an Act of Parliament, Laws of Malawi, and Cap 36:02 as a non profit making statutory organization. Since its establishment, Government has subvented almost two thirds of the Council operations. The Nurse and Midwives Act has been revised several times to incorporate changes affecting the profession. The current Act which is in use was revised in 1995 and is known as the Nurses and Midwives Act, No. 16 of 1995.

The overall objective of the Council is to develop, maintain, monitor, evaluate and control the profession of nursing and midwifery thereby contributing to the national health goal of raising the health status of Malawians

MISSION STATEMENT

Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi exists to regulate nursing and midwifery education, training and practice in order to protect the public

VISION
